Sports and Our Youth

Sports (or physical sport) is any form of generally competitive physical activity that, through organised or casual participation, attempt to employ, build or improve a specific physical skill and/or capability while also providing entertainment for participants, and at times, spectators. The foundation of the game or sports can be almost anything: rowing, walking, wrestling, basketball, hockey, golf, soccer, track and field and other running events. In most cases, sports can also be divided further into specific games: tennis, badminton, bowling, horse racing, cricket and so on. While most sports are competitive, others that have a more general approach may be considered recreational sports such as, swimming, tennis, hiking and the list goes on. However, the most common types of sports are American football, ice hockey, ice skating, baseball, basketball and football (football being the most popular in America).

Professional and college athletic competitions are perhaps the most well-known example of competitive sports. Such sports have become so popular that they are often televised around the world, with millions tuning in to watch. Professional sportswear and equipment has been designed to help players enhance their performance and stay in peak physical condition. The Olympic Park was designed with an intention of making the sports more popular and as a result, the quality of sporting gear and clothing is world class and has helped pave the way towards a better health and fitness sector in developing countries.

Sports also help build and improve mental and physical abilities. As it is impossible to compete against another individual perfectly, even with physical skill, one must learn how to maximise his abilities and use them to the best of his ability. Most sports teach skills that help to ensure fair competition and this includes strategic thinking, decision-making, teamwork and other interpersonal skills. These skills are essential in a competitive and non-competitive environment.

Physical activity and sports help to promote health and physical dexterity, improving endurance and stamina as well as coordination, balance and agility. Athletic endeavour allows participants to become physically active and improves cardiovascular and respiratory capabilities. Better physical health can be achieved by participating in sports, and it is important to engage in sport-related activities as a means to improve health. For those suffering from a physical limitation, sports provide a range of opportunities to exercise and build strength, conditioning, coordination, flexibility and stamina. Those who are committed to their sport or competing in a sport-specific event will be challenged to increase their physical strength, develop greater endurance, improve upon their sport related strength and compete at a higher level than the rest of the population.

For children, playing sports helps to develop healthy habits that will stay with them throughout life. Most sports provide a platform for young athletes to develop mental and physical dexterity and help them build self-confidence and positive attitude towards the world. Most sports give children a taste of real competition, which inspires them to become more committed to their sport throughout the school, and prepares them to face the rigours of competitive life.

Young people who have been described as having an average to above average intelligence, with high spirits and competitive spirits can benefit from participating in sports. Participating in organized sports can increase the development of hand-eye coordination and physical dexterity, as well as intellectual agility and sportsmanship. Participating in organized sports gives young people a taste of real competition, which inspires them to become more dedicated to their sport throughout the school, and builds positive attitude towards the world. Most importantly, participation in sports promotes social interaction and social skill. These intangible benefits make sports enjoyable and help young people to become well rounded human beings with increased compassion and understanding.
